An ill man was humiliated and accused of begging by Tesco staff in Litherland, Merseyside.
Billy Taylor was denied entry by a Tesco security guard to a Tesco store in Litherland, Merseyside after he tried to go inside the store where his mother was shopping.
The 58-year-old, who suffers from a lung condition, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), was accused of begging outside the store and was humiliated by the security guard.
He had been discharged from the hospital a few days before the incident only.
Mr. Taylor’s family complained and Tesco has now apologized for the incident.
Mr. Taylor’s niece, Rachael Taylor, said: “He’s gone into the shop and found a member of staff to ask them to find what he was looking for and they said to him ‘you’ve been begging outside, you need to leave.’”
“Then the security fella came over to him and got his arm and said you need to leave, you’ve been begging outside. He said what are you talking about? He was fuming.”
“He’s quite pale in the face because he’d only just come out of hospital a few days before, he has COPD. But he was just standing outside waiting for my nan to do her shopping.”
“He told my nan who was at the till ‘leave the stuff we’re going. They’re accusing me of begging outside.’ My nan was furious when he told her what happened. She told the staff to go and get the manager but they said she’d gone home.”
The family is upset and said that even if he was homeless, they have no right to treat someone so badly in front of so many people.
Mr. Taylor’s niece also filled in a complaint form on their website but they haven’t received a proper apology for the incident.
A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are very sorry about this customer’s experience at our store. The store manager has been in touch with Ms. Taylor to apologise and try to resolve her complaint. We have spoken to our security colleagues.”
