A teacher from Texas has been disciplined and put on administrative leave for selecting a controversial middle school yearbook design cover.

The teacher who works as a specialist in teaching fine arts in the area of suburban Dallas in Texas was told to take some time off last week, right after she made so many heads turn after approving a yearbook design cover that had references to the Black Lives Matter Movement.

In particular, the references included ‘I can’t breathe’ and ‘love is love.’

The teacher was reportedly identified by local media outlets as Kayla Mick who is a staff member at the Downing Middle School. She said yes to the selected artwork that had been chosen by young students in grade eight. Therefore, the artwork was all set to be featured on the yearbook’s cover for this year, which was also published last week.

But before all of that could happen, Mick was shocked to find out how she wouldn’t be returning back to her teaching duties, anytime soon as a sudden controversy enveloped her name.

News reports spoke about how so many parents were shocked and furious at the artwork selected for the yearbook. They found it highly insensitive and inappropriate to put matter relating to the Black Lives Matter Movement over a yearbook cover.

Moreover, reports also suggested how the offended parents refused to collect their students’ yearbooks for this very reason. But the school’s principal did try his level best to convince the offended parents how they were willing to change the cover’s design, just for them.

The phrase, “I can’t breathe,” was mentioned by George Floyd during the time of his death when a police officer from Minneapolis kneeled across his neck, resulting in his death.

On the other hand, one former candidate for the position of mayor, Stephanie Bell, has also raised her voice against the incident and has even vowed to begin a petition that prevents the school’s district from infringing upon the freedom of speech that is possessed by the students.
