Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, has donated $1 million to help fight hunger in Ethiopia after he saw what was happening in the country.
According to the New York Times, he was left heartbroken for the people in the African country and he also encouraged others who can to make a donation.
“My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction,” the Grammy-winner wrote on Instagram.
“I will be donating $1 million to provide 2 million meals through the United Nations World Food Programme and encourage those who can to please give as well,” The Blinding Lights hitmaker continued.
His Instagram post also included photos of children from Ethiopia.
The Weeknd’s parents are both from Ethiopia and he grew up speaking the country’s official language, Amharic.
Last summer, the singer donated $300,000 to Global Aid after the explosions in Beirut, Lebanon left more than 200 people dead and around 6,000 injured.
His manager, Wassim Slaiby, said at that time: “I want to thank my brother @theweeknd for his generous and class act donating $300,000 to the Global Aid for Lebanon campaign.”
Slaiby also thanked the CEO of Live Nation Entertainment, Michael Rapino, for donating $50,000.
“I am so honored and humbled to work with artist’s who have such deep care for the world,” Slaiby, who was born in Lebanon, continued. “And right now for our brothers & sisters of Lebanon who are in pain and need our collective help.”
One person commented: “Much respect to The Weeknd for a huge act of generosity and kindness!!!!”
Another wrote: “I like how he keeps his music and activism separate.”
