A shameless thief has been caught on camera entering the home of a disabled pensioner and taking money from his wallet.
88-year-old Dennis Birch was sitting in his wheelchair watching TV with the door open because of the hot weather when an unknown man entered his house.
The footage showed a man entering the property after seeing the door was open. He spoke to Mr. Birch while appearing to check the place for valuable items.
While distracting the pensioner, the brazen thief picked Mr. Birch’s wallet from the counter and walked away with a £5 note.
According to his stepson Paul Daley, Mr. Birch didn’t realize the theft had already taken place.
Mr. Birch’s family only suspected something had happened when the carer contacted them to say he had seen the live video and a stranger suddenly entered the house.
“I was in total shock when I watched the footage,” Mr. Daley said.
“You can hear on the CCTV what he is saying but it’s in a different language and Dad doesn’t understand and wants him out.
“The guy uses a distraction and is blocking dad’s eyes so he can get his wallet without him seeing it.
“It’s affected me because I worry about him and now I worry about him even more because if this guy’s not caught, he’ll be back or passing on his details to his other friends because my dad’s in a wheelchair and can’t defend himself.”
Police confirmed in a statement to the Yorkshire Evening Post that they are investigating the incident.
One internet user wrote: “The lowest of the low. He should get 5 years minimum.”
Another commented: “The pensioner is lucky he only lost a fiver instead of his life.”
A third said: “Disgusting. This is wrong.”
