Thieves stole a solid gold toilet worth £1 million from Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire at around 4:50 am.
A man has been arrested in connection with the theft of the 18-carat toilet.
The palace, where visitors can spend money in the golden loo, was closed because of the unexpected situation. Police also said that the raised caused ‘significant damage and flooding.’
“The piece of art that has been stolen is a high value toilet made out of gold that was on display at the palace,” said Detective Inspector Jess Milne.
“Due to the toilet being plumbed into the building, this has caused significant damage and flooding.
“We believe a of group offenders used at least two vehicles during the offence.
“The artwork has not been recovered at this time, but we are conducting a thorough investigation to find it and bring those responsible to justice.
“I am appealing to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area to contact police.”
A 66-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the burglary. However, it is thought the golden toilet is yet to be recovered.
The fully functioning 18-carat toilet titled ‘America’ was designed by artist Maurizio Cattelan.
Speaking before its installation, Edward Spencer-Churchhill, the founder of the Blenheim Art Foundation, said to The Times: “Despite being born with a silver spoon in my mouth I have never had a s*** on a golden toilet, so I look forward to it.”
He also said to the outlet that he didn’t think the golden loo needed a guard as it ‘wouldn’t be the easiest thing to nick.’
“Firstly, it’s plumbed in. And secondly, a potential thief will have no idea who last used the toilet or what they ate.
“So no, I don’t plan to be guarding it.”
