A severely dehydrated koala was caught on camera clinging onto a cyclist’s hand as the Good Samaritan was offering the animal water from her own bottle.
Anna Heusler was on her way to Adelaide, Australia, together with a group of cyclists when she took notice of a distressed koala on the road.
Immediately, the cyclists knew something was off which is why they stopped and helped the animal get off the road.
As they were assisting the koala in getting to the bushland, the thirsty animal rushed to Anna’s side and started wolfing the water from her bottle.
“I stopped on my bike and he walked right up to me, quite quickly for a koala, and as I was giving him a drink from all our water bottles, he actually climbed up onto my bike,” the woman revealed in an interview with 7News. “None of us have ever seen anything like it.”
After the incident, Anna has also shared heartbreaking images of the koala clinging to her bike on Instagram where she wrote:
“Australian Koala Bears suffering severe thirst in a heatwave. This Koala walked right up to me as I was descending and climbed up onto my bike while I gave him water.”
Due to raging bushfires and scorching heat in many parts of Australia, thousands of koalas have perished whereas others are being forced to scavenge for water and food.
“A big problem we’re noticing now is koalas are coming in starving… there’s just no food. And part of the problem is there’s often at least four days until someone finds them,” Jane Brister of Adelaide Koala Rescue revealed.
