Three castaway cows were found living on North Carolina’s Outer Banks after hurricane Dorian swept them out to the sea.
It is believed that the three animals survived the storm by swimming around five miles from Cedar Island where the cows roam freely.
But when hurricane Dorian struck in September, it washed the herd and other animals to the sea, including 28 horses that passed away.
One month after the storm, a cow was seen by park staff. The other two were then spotted in the last two weeks.
The three cows are now grazing happily after the unforgettable incident.
Seashore spokesperson B.G. Horvat said to The Charlotte Observer that the animals need to go back home.
“I’ll say it’s about 4 miles across Core Sound,” he said.
“Remember, the cows and all the horses were swept away with the water surging back. Who knows exactly, but the cows certainly have a gripping story to share.”
Horvat continued: “Ever since they found each other, they have been hanging out together. They are just grazing on the North Core Island.”
Other animals that passed away are believed to have been pulled into the Atlantic.
The cows were part of a herd who are looked after by wild horse manager Woody Hancock, who said that 28 of the 49 horses on Cedar Island were suspected dead.
One internet user commented: “As cows have three stomachs likely each one full of gas they were not easily going to sink with their own very convenient placed internal life jackets.. All they did was to keep their legs moving while looking for fresh pastures and the sea currents eventually washed them ashore. I feel sure they were not duly disturbed by the adventure and may even be planning more oceanic trips to enliven their otherwise quite boring existence.”
Another wrote: “Just moooving home.”
A third added: “Well done cows. Hope they spare you from the slaughterhouse.”
