Greta Thunberg Nominated For Time Magazine’s Person Of The Year


Teen climate activist Greta Thunberg has been named Time magazine’s Person of the Year for 2019.

She is the youngest person ever to have received the accolade.

Thunberg who belongs to Sweden became internationally recognized when she started her environmental campaign in August 2018.

In the initial stages of her campaign, the teen skipped her school, sat outside the Swedish parliament and demanded Sweden’s leaders to take effective action against climate change.

Soon after, her fight for nature became a global movement.

Appreciating the 16-year-old activist, the magazine wrote: “In the 16 months since, she has addressed heads of state at the UN, met with the pope, sparred with the president of the United States and inspired 4 million people to join the global climate strike on September 20, 2019, in what was the largest climate demonstration in human history.

“Margaret Atwood compared her to Joan of Arc. After noticing a hundredfold increase in its usage, lexicographers at Collins Dictionary named Thunberg’s pioneering idea, climate strike, the word of the year.”

Not too long ago, the climate activist severely criticized the world leaders at the UN climate summit for their inaction against climate change.

Thunberg, who’ll turn 17 next month, accused the world leaders of using tactics to convey the impression that they are working on significant climatic targets.

The teen went viral after she angrily stared at President Trump when he decided to leave the summit.

A number of people around the world have applauded the magazine for selecting the teen activist as their Person of the Year.

Former US Vice President Al Gore, who is also an environmentalist, called Thunberg’s selection by the magazine as ‘brilliant choice.’

He said: “Greta embodies the moral authority of the youth activist movement demanding that we act immediately to solve the climate crisis. She is an inspiration to me and to people across the world.”
