Golf legend Tiger Woods has no memory of the horrific car crash that left him with severe leg injuries.
According to Los Angeles Sheriff Alex Villanueva, the 45-year-old superstar golfer was calm when he was found trapped in the SUV after the accident on Tuesday.
“At the hospital he was asked about it by investigators and said he had no recollection of the crash itself,” he told CNN.
Deputy Carlos Gonzales, the first to arrive on the scene, also said: “I don’t think he was aware of how gravely he was injured at the time.
“It could be a mixture of adrenaline, it could’ve been shock.
“From the moment he rolled over to when I arrived it was very quick, so I don’t know if he had time to fully assess his injuries.”
Woods was driving to the Rolling Hills Country Club where he was scheduled to meet LA Chargers’ quarterback Justin Herbert and New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees to film a show for GolfTV.
Sheriffs said that the crash site is a known problem area as they have seen drivers fly down the road. They also said that motorists tend to increase the speed without realizing that their speed will increase on its own.
Woods was rushed to the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he underwent extensive surgery.
Villanueva also said during a Q&A on Facebook: “There was no evidence of any impairment whatsoever. He was lucid, no odor of alcohol, no evidence of any medication, narcotics or anything like that.
“That was not a concern so no field sobriety test and no drug expert needed to respond. This is what it is – an accident.”
When asked if Woods may face any charges, Villanueva answered: “No. A reckless driving charge has a lot of elements to it. This was purely an accident.”
He also said that the 45-year-old was pulled out of a windshield and that authorities planned to pull the vehicle’s black box to check for more details.
Woods remains at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center after having his right leg and ankle repaired.
LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a press conference that the near-fatal crash happened when Woods was driving at a “greater speed than normal.”
“(The car) crossed the center divider, to the point that it rested several hundred feet away so obviously that indicates they were going at a relatively – a greater speed than normal.
“However, because it is downhill, it slopes and it also curves. That area has a high frequency of accidents. It’s not uncommon.”
