The five million population of Sydney could be tested up to three times for coronavirus.
The city will execute it under its new testing attempt, before easing the lockdown restrictions.
The head of the pathology service at St. Vincent’s Hospital believes that such an extensive testing process is the only way to get ahead of this deadly virus and enable the state to ease its lockdown measures.
Greg Granger said that the virus continues to be highly inevitable, and if we are not careful then things can get out of hand anytime. He confirmed that everyone in Sydney will be tested and will be retested again and again.
The next phase of testing has started on Wednesday in which Dr. Kerry Chant, the chief health officer from New South Wales met with pathology service providers to assess the testing capacity of the state. In this meeting, the officials discussed expanding the criteria of eligibility for the test.
As of now, testing is limited to people who are diagnosed with similar symptoms by a GP and the people who have been in contact with the person infected by the virus. Testing is also done extensively on people who live in hotspot regions like Macquarie Park and Bondi.
Dr. Chant revealed that if the state has adequate testing kits and swab collection points, then the officials will be initiating the testing on anyone who wants to take a COVID-19 test after experiencing symptoms.
Scott Morrison, the Prime Minister of the country, has also announced that the country will be looking at mass testing before it can think about relaxing social distancing measures.
Moreover, Mr. Granger said that even though the infection rate has seen a decline, a simple isolated gathering can also spark the virus outbreak again.
He also confirmed that the testing capacity has significantly expanded from the time Australia first saw the outbreak. There were only six new cases registered on Tuesday, which took the total of the country to 2,969, and the death toll stands at 31.
