Molly Hughes was not even one year old when doctors diagnosed her with stage 4 cancer.
After five rounds of chemo and radiation, she is finally cancer-free.
When she was only five months old, doctors discovered that she had neuroblastoma, a type of cancer that usually affects children under the age of 5.
Chelsea Hughes, her mother, told WKYT that she endured 15 months of chemotherapy. Now that she is finally free from the hospital, she is ‘just wild,’ happily playing outside, as if her struggles never occurred at all.
There could be no better relief for her mother than the moment they received the wonderful news that cancer no longer appeared in Molly’s scans.
“I kinda just fell to the ground after I got off the phone and I just hugged her for like five minutes,” she told WKYT.
Her cancer started with a genetic mutation that disrupts the development of immature nerve cells. These cells (neuroblasts) usually become the adrenal glands located on top of the kidneys and produce hormones.
These do not become completely developed until after birth. In rare cases, the immature cells divide and become cancerous. Neuroblastomas may develop in the chest or abdomen.
Abdominal neuroblastomas may cause diarrhea, constipation and pain in the area. Chest tumors may also cause pain, eye abnormalities like unequally sized pupils or droopy eyelids, and wheezing.
At only 5 months, Molly was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and underwent surgery to remove the tumor. It was then followed by chemotherapy and radiation.
“I don’t think people realize, until you actually go through it, just how hard it is,” Chelsea expressed.
However, little Molly was very strong even from the first day. “She would just bounce back after every treatment, I mean it would knock her down for a few days, but then she’d be up playing.”
Chelsea added: “She loves being outside from the time she gets up til she goes to bed, she’s just wild,’ said Chelsea. [She is] so full of energy and just loves doing what a baby should be doing.”
