A five-year-old kid reportedly carried a toddler for half a mile in freezing temperature after they were abandoned in a remote home in Alaska.
According to the Alaska State Troopers, the five-year-old walked without shoes and in light clothing to the nearest house, located at a distance of half a mile last Friday.
The news release from the official sources says that the Alaska State Troopers were mobilized to a small village known as Venetie after they received a call about two children who arrived at a neighbor’s house, suffering from severe cold.
The authorities said the elder child freaked out when the power went out in his house, so he carried the 18-month-old with him and went to find help at his neighbor’s – half a mile away.
The children were dressed in light clothing and had only socks, with no shoes at all.
Venetie, which is a small village of just 175 people, had a temperature of minus 31 degrees that night.
According to Fox News, the State Troopers used an aircraft to reach the site and inspect the matter. It is however still unclear how long the children had been alone in their house.
The Anchorage Daily News reported that an official from the Alaska State Troopers, Ken Marsh, said that the exact nature of injuries of the children could not be determined at the time.
But both of them are suffering from cold-related injuries.
The investigation has led authorities to hold Julie Peter, 37, as the adult responsible for leaving the children abandoned at the house. The relation of Julie with the children is however still unknown.
Julie was arrested and charged with one count of Endangering the Welfare of a Minor in the First Degree.
According to the Anchorage Daily News, Julie was sent to Fairbanks Correctional Center on the charge.
