63-year-old Tom Hanks has shared photos of a huge bag of plasma he donated to help combat coronavirus.
The actor donated plasma weeks after he and his wife Rita Wilson recovered from coronavirus. They were deemed to be carrying antibodies that could be helpful to researchers looking for ways to fight the infection.
“Here’s last week’s bag of plasma. Such a bag!” the actor wrote on Twitter. “After the paperwork, it’s as easy as taking a nap. Thanks arimoin and UCLA. Hanks.”
Recovered coronavirus patients’ blood will be used by researchers who are developing a vaccine.
Hanks also joked about the creation of a ‘Hank-ccine’ when he appeared on NPR’s Wait Wait…. Don’t Tell Me!
The couple were among the famous people to test positive for coronavirus. They developed symptoms while in Australia where Hanks was making his new film.
The Saving Private Ryan star kept his fans updated on their condition while in isolation. They managed to fully recover and were allowed to fly back to their Los Angeles home. Upon arriving back, the couple enrolled in a medical study to check if their antibodies would be beneficial to researchers.
Hanks then revealed that they’ve been approved to donate blood as they ‘carry the antibodies.’ He also hopes that if their blood proves to be useful in the fight against COVID-19, he is responsible for the development of a ‘Hank-ccine.’
He said on the public radio game: “We just found out that we do carry the antibodies. We have not only been approached; we have said, do you want our blood? Can we give plasma?
“And, in fact, we will be giving it now to the places that hope to work on what I would like to call the Hank-ccine.”
