Tom Selleck has inspired many Americans through his influential roles in countless films and TV series.
He has become one of the most successful people in the film industry. He, however, credits his success to only one thing–his faith in Jesus Christ. Tom did not always have a strong faith in Jesus Christ. He states that his life as a Christian has been pretty rocky and has finally decided to open up about his side of the story. If you’ve been a big fan of Tom Selleck and his films, by reading this article, you will find an even deeper respect for the man who humbled himself in Jesus Christ.
Tom was born in Detroit, Michigan on January 29, 1945. He was the second born of four children and was raised by a father who was working as a carpenter. His father, later on, became a successful executive and real estate investor. Tom was in middle school when his family moved to Sherman Oaks, California where his father invested in real estate.

Living in California, Tom grew up to be a mature and responsible teenager. When it was time for him to go to college, he couldn’t afford to go to the University of Southern California like he’d wished. So, instead, he went to Valley Junior College. He eventually transferred to USC after earning a basketball scholarship and saving money.
In college, he majored in business administration. And while studying he was invited by a drama coach and entered Hollywood. In 1965 and 1967, he made an appearance on The Dating Game and shot multiple TV commercials.
When Selleck graduated from college, Twentieth Century Fox offered him an acting contract. However, God offered him a different path. So, he took a break from his acting career and chose to join the army–just in time for the Vietnam War. In 1967, he joined the California National Guard and served for 6 years. “I am a veteran, I’m proud of it,” he shared.

After that, he resumed his acting. And it was then, his role as “Thomas Magnum” changed his life forever. The show ran for 8 seasons and 162 episodes and in 1984, he won the Emmy Award for ‘Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series‘.
Tom Selleck did NOT stop listening to God. God asked him once more to take a break from his acting career. And he did.
“As good as this business has been to me, that’s not what life is about. Life is about more important things. You know, we’ve all struggled as we get successful in this business to balance that, I certainly have.”

After 11 years of acting, he took his big break in 1980 and got married. Selleck credits all his success and fortune to Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He stated, “I try very hard to conduct myself in an ethical way, because that’s important to my stability now. We’re a culture that’s so centered on the individual.”
“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time.”
