Halloween in the US is a big celebration that is practically inseparable from trick-or-treating and scary costumes.

It’s so big that even other countries who normally don’t celebrate Halloween have come to adopt those same trick-or-treat customs.

It’s funny how the Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, of today, differs from its likely beginnings. From its supposed pagan beginnings to its adoption into the Christian tradition, there’s no doubt that those who originally practiced this tradition would find this current form of celebration practically unrecognizable.

But it’s the tradition that modern society has woken up to and it doesn’t look like this will be changing any time soon (just try telling your kid that they’re not going to go treat-or-treating this year and you’ll have a mutiny in your household!).

Nevertheless, with Halloween being so popular, it’s no surprise that it’s big business. It’s so big that the National Retail Federation even estimates that in 2019, Americans will be spending $9 billion for this celebration.

Out of that very significant pie, candies account for $2.6 billion. That’s no surprise as children (and even some adults) are expected to go around trick-or-treating and all those goodies just keep flowing around. Some people probably even buy candies just for the heck of it.

Either way, despite the gaiety of the celebration, we should also remember that these candies contain a lot of sugar. While sampling one or two should be fine, popping one in your mouth whenever you come from a trick or treat probably won’t leave you feeling good at the end of the day!
