A renowned Australian rugby player has been sacked with his $4 million contract canceled as a result of his homophobic post in which the star addressed homosexuals and warned them to repent because hell awaits them.
Following weeks after the incident, Folau was officially kicked from the Australia rugby team due to violating the players’ code of conduct.
The controversial post that got the rugby player fired consisted of a picture that read:
“WARNING – Drunks, Homosexuals, Adulterers, Liars, Fornicators, Thieves, Atheists, Idolaters, HELL AWAITS YOU. REPENT!”
Following the union’s decision to sack him, the devout Christian now has the right to appeal in order for his case to get reviewed by a newly-appointed panel.
According to the reports, however, the 30-year-old will skip this process and continue by taking the case to the court on the basis that he’s getting persecuted because of his religion.
Following the decision, Raelene Castle, the CEO of Rugby Australia, admitted that Folau makes a “great player” but expressed that everyone should be respected regardless of their religion, race, gender, or sexuality.
Speaking of the rugby player, Alan Jones, former Wallabies coach, spoke out and claimed that the rugby union “internationally destroyed his name for quoting a passage from the bible.”
“We want to stress that this outcome is a painful outcome for the game. Rugby Australia did not choose to be in this situation, but Rugby Australia’s position remains that Israel, through his actions, left us with no choice but to pursue today’s outcome,” Raelene Castle added.
“This has been an extremely challenging period for rugby. This issue has created an unwanted distraction in an important year for the sport and the Wallabies team.
“Our clear message today is that we need to stand by our values and the qualities of inclusion, passion, integrity, discipline, respect and teamwork.”
