A British tourist was left shocked after learning that his £100-a-night home in Amsterdam which he booked through Airbnb was actually a shipping container by the roadside with a portable toilet.
Ben Speller found a £100 listing for a ‘clean home’ in Amsterdam ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s match against local team Ajax.
He booked the £100-a-night home through Airbnb.
But, he was left shocked when he arrived for his one-night stay and found a grey shipping container with three mattresses and a portable toilet inside at Pauwenpad, near the Prins Bernhardplein, in Amsterdam.
He told Dutch news site AT5: ‘We had already driven past the container three times in the taxi trying to find the place. We thought, “This can’t be it.”
‘But when we got out it turned out that it was true. We opened the door and looked inside, locked the door and left. Then we went to a hotel.’
He asked the owner for a refund but he denied. Later, Airbnb refunded the £100 listing fee as well as the £230 for the hotel booking itself.
A spokesperson for Airbnb said: ‘We have removed the host and listings from our platform.’
‘Misrepresented or fraudulent listings have no place on our platform, and our team works hard to constantly strengthen our defenses and stay ahead of bad actors.’
