Bali’s resort region was hit by a massive 6.
2 magnitude earthquake. The witnesses reported shaking of walls in their houses.
The shaking woke up many residents on Tuesday morning. The EMSC reported that as many as eight million people felt the earthquake.
The EMSC later declared that it was a 5.7 magnitude earthquake instead of 6.2 as reported initially.
Hotels in Seminyak on southern end of Bali were evacuated after the region was hit by underwater earthquake. The earthquake might be 100km below the ground, as estimated, but there are no signs of Tsunami.
The locals and tourists have been asked to remain calm by the Indonesian agency that monitored earthquakes (BMKG).
The agency also suggested people to make sure their building or house is earthquake resistant and ensure that there is no damage due to the vibrations.
The strong earthquake was felt for ten seconds by locals in Kuta, Ubud and Seminyak.
A hotel at Nusa Dua suffered damages and collapsing of rocks off the entrance was reported by the witnesses. While a tourist staying in Bali’s Hilton Garden Inn woke up to rattling but didn’t see damages.
There are no fatalities or major damages reported.
A user tweeted about feeling the strong earthquake with no damage. Another one tweeted that is was a second earthquake it Ubud, Bali, in a week. One of the users tweeted that people’s eyes were set on the water after feeling the earthquake, fearing high waves.
Students were sent home by local schools and remained closed for a day. A Hindu temple at Pura Agung Lokantha saw some damage with bricks falling.
