Unruly tourists were caught on camera throwing stones into the enclosure of a giant panda located in Beijing Zoo in China.
In the video recorded by one of the witnesses, one disorderly Chinese tourist threw a rock close to the giant panda in an attempt to wake it up and get it to move for their entertainment.
According to the witnesses, the large stone was one of many thrown by two people who were upset by the fact that the animal didn’t want to move when they arrived to see it.
The incident was shared on Weibo where thousands of animal lovers slammed the tourists and expressed their wish to see them fined and banned from the zoo for life.
In response to the video going viral, the zoo confirmed that the panda was not injured by the rocks and that it continued with its daily activities as usual. In addition, the unruly tourists allegedly got blacklisted from the zoo.
As the witness added in an interview with Beijing News, the two tourists were throwing rocks into the enclosure for as long as 30 minutes.
Besides sharing the video, the woman allegedly also spoke to the zoo’s authorities and asked them to upgrade their outdated facilities in order to keep animals such as the giant pandas safe from thousands of tourists who visit them daily.
According to the reports, the incident took place at the old panda pavilion which was built in 1989 and remains fairly exposed to the public.
Following the social media outrage, the Beijing Zoo spoke out and confirmed that they are planning on renovating the giant panda pavilion in question. In addition, they urged the zoo visitors to behave in a “civilized” manner.
