A small town will have a new name after bad jokes from visitors and social media became too much to bear.
After years of ridicule, F**king residents said they finally grew tired of the bad jokes, which experts said dates back to the 11th century.
According to reports, the town of about 100 people will be changed Fugging from January 1, 2021.
Mayor Andrea Holzner told the regional daily Oberosterreichische Nachrichten (OOeN) about the impending change.
She said: “I can confirm that the village is being renamed. I really don’t want to say anything more – we’ve had enough media frenzy about this in the past.”
She said residents, called F**kingers, “have had enough of visitors and their bad jokes.”
But not everyone is happy about the change. One person asked: “Don’t people have any sense of humour these days?”
Another wrote: “They’re getting free publicity – they ought to have been happy to have a funny name.”
The town has managed to avoid mockery until the internet arrived and made the name go viral. It has been featured on articles and lists about the rudest city or town names.
A 2012 article claims residents were getting tired of naked couples traveling to their town just to have sex in front of the sign.
But others tried to take advantage of the situation by including the name on their products and services.
