Looking for a new home? Paying rent and mortgage can be dreadful but buying a house with multiple rooms and spectacular views can be within your reach!
A town in Italy puts more than 500 abandon homes up for sale for only $1 each. The houses in Mussomeli in southern Sicily are small but they offer breathtaking views across the countryside and have multiple bedrooms for all members of the family.
A local government left signs on the doors to display their availability – but here’s the catch.
Lucky buyers must renovate the house within three years or they will face losing their deposit which is around $8,000.
Renovating the houses has been estimated at about $107 per square foot and admin costs from $4,000 to $6,450.
Local engineers and architects are on hand to assist with the work but you can choose to get outside help, depending on your preferences.
The sale comes as Italians have left the area to live in cities in recent years. This forced authorities to sell off houses for very low prices.
Mussomeli, located two hours southeast of Palermo, has a medieval castle, numerous ancient churches, and Byzantine caves to sweeten the deal.
Last year, Ollolai town, which rests in the mountain region of Barbagia, offered 200 homes for only $1 each. The population had reduced to half over the past three decades, with only 1,300 people left.
With only a small number of children born every year, mayor of Ollolai decided to prevent the population from decreasing further by putting houses up for only $1 each in 2015.
Also, buyers had to commit to renovating their houses within three years at an estimated cost of more than $30,000.
