A mother-of-seven was left shocked when a train guard arranged for her to see her sick baby in hospital for free.
The mom spends $164 (125 pounds) a week to travel 70 miles to visit her 4-month-old sick daughter. She was left stunned by the rail conductor’s act of kindness.
41-year-old Rachel Broadway gave birth to twins in December. Her son Odin came home but daughter Ocean has been kept in a neonatal ward.
The girl was diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis, a condition that affects the intestines in babies delivered early.
Her mother has been spending $32 a day to travel from Retford, Nottinghamshire to Sheffield Teaching Hospital 5 days a week. She had been unable to visit more regularly because of the expense.
Because Ocean is getting regular treatments, she has no idea when her little girl will be able to come home.
But Rachel doesn’t have to pay for pricey train fares anymore to check on her daughter after a train guard named Emma arranged for her to travel for free.
When she found out the heartbreaking reason for Rachel’s travel from Monday to Friday, the Northern Rail worker spoke with the manager who helped her travel without paying train fares until her baby is out of the hospital.
The grateful mother wrote on Facebook: “I am absolutely pleased with their humanity – so much love from me and thanks to them for their kindness.
“This now means that I can see Ocean every day rather than just the five – it will save a lot of money along the way.
“It’s been such a difficult few months for me and the kids, so this has raised our spirits so much. ‘Emma, you are one in a million and I am in tears of gratitude.”
