Whenever someone decides to lose weight, it’s a noble aspiration but a difficult journey.

Not only do you have to drag yourself to the gym (at first) and work out hard, you need to cut all that unhealthy (but oh so delicious) food out of your life. And you need to keep your focus for months, if not the rest of your life.

This is where personal trainers come in because not only will they share their technical expertise on the right exercises to perform, they also wholeheartedly motivate us to become better versions of ourselves. How willing a trainer is to share your pain and embark on this journey with you is what makes or breaks them.

By this measure, Adonis Hill is one of the best trainers out there, one who was willing to go the extra mile for his clients.

It all started with the TV show Fit To Fat To Fit, where personal trainers are made to gain weight and challenge themselves in order to better understand what their clients are going through. When he was asked if he was willing to gain 70 lbs for someone else, Adonis replied, “If it means saving their life, heavens yes!”

His client Alissa had been having weight problems her whole life. At the start of the project, she was at 308 lbs so Adonis had to gain more than 70 lbs in 4 months to match his client. He did this by eating tons of junk food and drinking soda while at the same time, he stopped exercising.

But his dedication did not come without risks. Doctors had to cut his weight gaining process one month earlier than planned because Adonis had developed hypertension and became pre-diabetic. Luckily, once he got his weight back to normal he didn’t need the meds anymore. But he never regretted his decision and likened the risk he took with “a fireman going into a burning building and rescuing someone trapped by a fire.”

Once Adonis hit his “target” weight, the second part of the journey began. Alissa and her selfless trainer worked hard so that both of them could get the bodies of their dreams. They ran and lifted weights and made sure they adhered to the strict diet, all the while supporting each other through those difficult times.

Not only did they have to fight off lazy behavior, but they also had to overcome old addictions to healthy food, all while enduring negative comments from others.

But several months of hard work bore fruit. Alissa lost 57 lbs in 4 months while Adonis said his weight settled at 227 lbs. All that sacrifice was worth it.

Based on this experience, Adonis Hill demonstrated that anything is possible if one is motivated enough. He said it was all about empathy as well as the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person. The trainer hopes that with this success, more awareness about the risks of obesity can be raised. “If we continued down that unhealthy road, the cemetery is where we would’ve ultimately ended up.”
