A transgender woman has been shot dead for using the women’s toilet at McDonald’s restaurant in the town of Toa Baja, north of Puerto Rico.
Neulisa Luciano Ruiz was killed on Monday after she used the women’s toilet at McDonald’s restaurant.
A video has emerged after her death that shows Neulisa, who went by the name of Alexa, and two men and one of the men says: You bet I am going to go and shoot him.”
Her death sparked outrage online and authorities are urged to investigate her death.
Pedro Julio Serrano, an LGBT activist based in Puerto Rico, said it is a hate crime and Alexa was being “stalked and hunted” before being killed.
He said the video shows it was a “hate crime motivated by tolerance”.
He added: “We must denounce the hate speech of the fundamentalist groups that have promoted a climate where they prosecute and persecute a trans person for the mere fact of using a bathroom.”
The director of community engagement for the transgender justice initiative for the Human Rights Campaign, Tori Cooper, also condemned her death and called authorities to investigate her death with the utmost thoroughness and care.
She said the victim was a human being, a member of a community, a friend and a family member.
She also had dreams, hopes, hobbies and did not deserve to have her life taken from her.
She said: “Human Rights Campaign has heard that Ruiz was experiencing homelessness, further highlighting the ways a toxic mix of transphobia and misogyny conspire to put the transgender community at risk of extreme violence.”
The Police are investigating her death but it is not known whether the video that emerged after her death is linked to her death.
