A man who gave birth to two children has gathered the courage to open up about his traumatic pregnancy.
34-year-old Kayden Coleman is a transgender man who has called for better awareness and education on pregnancy for trans men after his distressing experience.
Now that his two children and 10 months and 7 years old, Coleman decided to speak out about his “tumultuous” pregnancy and the times he was misgendered and discriminated against.
According to the proud father, he was refused care and offered an abortion by medical experts after they found out he was a trans man.
“There was a lot of trauma. Most of that came from inside the birthing world, with medical professionals. There was a lot of questioning about my identity, a lot of misgendering,” Coleman said on the Today show.
“Being told I shouldn’t be in spaces I was seeking care from because they were considered women’s spaces. I was offered an abortion a ridiculous amount of times.”
As Coleman added, people often mistook his baby bump for a beer belly. While this definitely didn’t make him feel special like it should, the 34-year-old admitted it was better if people didn’t know he was pregnant.
“I didn’t have to walk around in fear, worrying that people wanted to inflict violence on me. They thought I had a beer belly,” he added.
Following his traumatic pregnancy, the father has become a trans advocate and educator who is aiming to raise awareness and help other people like him with his extensive knowledge of trans pregnancy.
“Being trans inclusive involves more than simply knowing the terminology. It’s more than having a few trans friends. And it is certainly more than having the mere desire to be an ally. It is work. Constant education. Understanding your privilege,” Coleman wrote on Instagram.
“It’s not about whether or not you quote-unquote agree with us. We don’t care about your acceptance or agreement. We just want equity and safe, inclusive care.”
