HipDict’s account on Instagram is going strong with over 2M followers and enough submissions to post every day, gaining its large following by defining words in a unique yet accurate way.
f you’ve ever texted “K” to someone, it could mean “okay” but you know it really only means one thing: you’re mad as hell. Instagram account HipDict tells it how it is, by defining what “K” and other everyday words really imply.
The hilarious “definitions” are all user-submitted, so anyone can add to the highly relatable crowdsourced collection.
Once a submission is accepted, the word and/or phrase is posted to Instagram in the layout style of a real dictionary definition.
Now with over 2.5 million followers, HipDict’s portfolio is full of honest and funny interpretations of words, with definitions that are perfectly phrased.
One user describes Instagram as “Like a fridge, you keep opening and closing it every few minutes to see if there’s anything good when you get bored.”
In another, “FaceTime” is defined as “I spend most of the time looking at myself in that little window instead of looking at you.” Guilty!
HipDict isn’t the first platform compiling how we bend language to our liking.
In the 00s, the crowdsourced dictionary format took off with Urban Dictionary, which, over its 20-year lifespan, has served as a repository for everything from slang definitions that have been presented to juries in a court of law, to incomprehensible inside jokes.
After all, the content posted by the account is user-submitted, which means that you too can send them a message offering up your best definitions if you’re feeling inspired after reading this list.
Check out some of our favorite word definitions from HipDict. These ones really cracked us up whilst satisfying our intellects too!
