President Donald Trump has been described by his secretary of energy, Rick Perry, as the ‘chosen one.
’
In an interview with Fox News, Trump’s adviser also compared the president to numerous biblical kings.
He told the broadcaster: “God’s used imperfect people all through history. King David wasn’t perfect, Saul wasn’t perfect, Solomon wasn’t perfect.”
Mr. Perry also said that he gave the president “a little one-pager on those Old Testament kings about a month ago.”
“I shared it with him and said, ‘Mr. President, I know there are people that say you said you were the chosen one and I said, ‘You were,’” he shared.
He added: “I said, ‘If you’re a believing Christian, you understand God’s plan for the people who rule and judge over us on this planet in our government.’”
After the teaser, Fox News journalist Ed Henry claimed that Mr. Perry said Trump was “sent by God to do great things.”
He also said that Perry “pointed out to me he believes Barack Obama was sent by God as well, for that moment and that time.”
Ana Navarro-Cardenas, a political commentator, did not hesitate to call out the president’s supporters. She wrote on Twitter: “Rick Perry is the latest to say Trump is “the chosen one”. It looks like a cult. It walks like a cult. It quacks like a cult. Yes, people. Trump’s base is a cult.”
The secretary’s remarks come amid an ongoing impeachment inquiry into the president, who has been accused of improperly asking for help from Ukraine officials to improve his chances of re-election next year.
A former governor of Texas, Perry will step down from his role in December.
