President Donald Trump hugged a wheel-chair bound and wounded Afghanistan hero who sang ‘God Bless America’ at a tribute ceremony to honor the new incoming chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The president’s rare display of affection came after US Army Captain Luis Avila sang the hymn in a ceremony filled with military bands, drum corp, a fife, a 21-gun salute, and other circumstance and pomp.
It was a moving moment for people who were present, which included incoming Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford, Vice President Mike Pence, and Defense Secretary Mark Esper.
Avila was leading a rescue mission along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in 2011 when an explosive device detonated below his vehicle, killing three others and wounding him severely.
He suffered two heart attacks and two strokes, along with a severe lack of oxygen that resulted in anoxic brain damage.
His injuries left him paralyzed and bound to a wheelchair, and his leg had to be amputated.
Avila was the featured singer for the ceremony honoring the appointment of Milley and the retirement of Dunford.
During the song, President Trump’s head moved with the music and gave Avila a thumbs up.
When the song was over, Trump walked over to the veteran hero and gave him a warm hug. He also embraced his wife, Claudia, who appeared to be in tears.
Avila also sang ‘God Bless America’ during the 2017 National Memorial Day Concert with Renee Fleming.
One internet user commented: “Donald Trump is a good man with a big heart. Never has anyone been so vilified for trying to do the right thing. Keep watching, you will see in the coming days exactly who has been telling the truth and who has not. The big reveal is near.”
Another wrote: “Greatest President ever. Cares about the Military and the American people.”
A third said: “God Bless you President Trump! My family prays for you.”
