A member of the Trump administration has been arrested by the FBI over his alleged role in the January 6 insurrection.
According to the reports, the federal agents arrested 42-year-old Federico Klein in Virginia after the man was allegedly seen assaulting Capitol police officers in CCTV footage from January 6.
Mr Klein has become the first member of the Trump administration to face arrest over the Capitol riot, whereas he was allegedly seen attacking cops around the Lower West Terrace.
The 42-year-old began working for the Trump administration in 2016 when he worked on the former president’s presidential campaign.
Later on, in 2017, Klein became an aide for the State Department after being appointed for the position by Donald Trump.
Following his arrest, Klein has been facing a series of charges including unlawful entry, obstructing Congress, assaulting an officer with a dangerous weapon, and violent and disorderly conduct, the New York Times reported.
According to the FBI, Klein was spotted assaulting police officers with a stolen riot shield while wearing a MAGA hat. At one instance, he was also seen attempting to breach defense lines before getting repelled by a chemical irritant.
As the authorities confirmed, the former State Department aide was arrested after the FBI received numerous tips after sharing posters with pictures of the Capitol riot’s most-wanted suspects.
Speaking of her son’s actions, Klein’s mom, Cecilia, said she thought her son was on the Mall at the time of the incident.
“As far as I know, he was on the Mall. That’s what he told me,” Cecilia said in an interview with Politico.
“While I believe, as he said, he was on the Mall that day, I don’t have any evidence, nor will I ever ask him, unless he tells me, where he was after he was on the Mall.”
While the mother admitted her son “burned a little hot” when it came to politics, she insisted he was never known to be capable of violating the law.
