Trump’s Secret Service protection has been extended to his adult children and close allies thanks to a directive that the former president issued shortly before departing from the White House.
As the Washington Post reported, Trump ensured that his children and top officials who recently left the government will be provided with Secret Service protection for six months until July.
While only Donald, Melania, and their son Barron, 14, were eligible for Secret Service protection under the federal law, the former POTUS issued a directive to extend the protection to his adult children for the period of six months.
This means that all four of Trump’s adult children, including Tiffany, Eric, Don. Jr, and Ivanka, will receive Secret Service protection for the agreed period of time. So will Ivanka’s husband Jared and Eric’s wife Lara.
Indirectly, though reportedly not mentioned in the directive, Trump’s 10 grandchildren will also be subjected to Secret Service protection thanks to the benefit that extends to their parents.
While Donald and Melania will be getting protection until the end of their lives, Barron’s privilege will automatically expire when he turns 16.
Besides Trump’s children, three top officials and Trump loyalists who left the government have also been provided with Secret Service protection for the period of six months.
These officials include former national security adviser Robert O’Brien, former chief of staff Mark Meadows, and former treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin.
While the directive has been issued by Trump shortly before he departed from the White House for the last time, the bill for the security of his children and top loyalists will be shouldered by taxpayers.
Though it is not unusual for presidents to request extended Secret Service protection for their children – as did also former presidents Obama, George W. Bush, and Clinton – It is not typical to extend the privilege to former government employees.
