Trump’s transgender military ban has been put into effect and threatens to cost 14,700 people of their jobs by requiring all military personnel to prove stable in their ‘birth gender’ while in service.
The President’s ideas of removing transgender people from the U.S. Army first came to light in 2017 when Trump tweeted:
“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.”
According to the Palm Center data, there are currently nearly 9,000 transgender people in service while over 5,700 of them remain in the Selective Reserve.
The ban, which had previously been turned down by a federal judge, has been heavily opposed by several LGBTQ+ groups.
Despite the implementation of the ban, Trump has decided to allow transgender personnel to serve until the end of their tenure provided that they agree to serve under their birth gender and don’t require medical support for gender dysphoria.
Meanwhile, the Navy announced that all off-duty soldiers are allowed to dress, act, and live as they please.
“I’m not sure who fights for us. Our nation is adrift in a political war of Right vs Left and the military is a PAWN,” Kristin Beck, a transgender woman and a former Navy Seal, said in a series of tweets advocating for the trans community.
“FACT: ‘The AMA has said repeatedly that there is no medically valid reason to exclude transgender individuals from military service.’ So this “Blanket” ban is based on FEAR… of what?”
