Sea turtles return to the exact location where they were born to lay their precious eggs.

In some cases, it takes years of swimming to get to that area.

But when an endangered turtle returned to a popular nesting site, she was forced to lay her eggs in the middle of a runway that has been built across the beach.

The green sea turtle, whose population is declining because of poachers killing them for meat and egg harvesting, returned to a Maldives beach only to find a runway had already been built on it.

A source from Maafaru Island Council told The Edition: “Despite the construction of the runway, the frequency with which turtles visit the island for nesting purposes has not decreased.”

Despite the heartbreaking photograph of the incident and the unfortunate circumstances, the green sea turtle was reportedly in good health and was seen swimming back into the sea.

According to The Edition, Maafaru has a long history of being a popular nesting site for hundreds of sea turtles. The numbers of turtles going to the island had not fallen since the construction of the runway last year.

Turtle laid three eggs on the runway

Maafaru International airport is still not completed but the project will accommodate a total of six jets. A resort and a hotel will also be built.
