Most companies and small businesses had to close down because of the coronavirus pandemic.
While many people were left unemployed, some were still able to work from the comfort of their homes.
Twitter, which employs 5,000 people, was also forced to close its offices due to Covid-19 outbreak. But now, staff who can work from home will be given the option to do so ‘forever!’
The social media giant’s CEO Jack Dorsey announced the new policy on May 12.
A Twitter spokesperson told The Verge in a statement: “If our employees are in a role and situation that enables them to work from home and they want to continue to do so forever, we will make that happen.
“If not, our offices will be their warm and welcoming selves, with some additional precautions, when we feel it’s safe to return. Opening offices will be our decision, when and if our employees come back, will be theirs.”
The spokesperson continued: “With very few exceptions, offices won’t open before September. When we do decide to open offices, it also won’t be a snap back to the way it was before. It will be careful, intentional, office by office and gradual.
“There will also be no business travel before September, with very few exceptions, and no in-person company events for the rest of 2020. We will assess 2021 events later this year.”
In an interview with BuzzNews, Twitter human resources head Jennifer Christie said that the working structure of the company would ‘never be the same.’
“People who were reticent to work remotely will find that they really thrive that way. Managers who didn’t think they could manage teams that were remote will have a different perspective,” she said. “I do think we won’t go back.”
