Zookeepers in Hong Kong were recently celebrating for a very strange reason.
Two giant pandas successfully mated.
You must be thinking why would they celebrate for such a normal thing. Well, you should know that it took them 10 years to finally mate.
Le Le and Ying Ying have recently broken the internet just by having sex.
This duo was kept in the same area for ten years but mated recently, probably because there are no tourists amid the coronavirus lockdown.
Now, the zookeepers are eagerly waiting to hear the good news about female panda’s pregnancy. This would keep the number of giant black pandas from falling.
The executive director of the zoological conservation and operation at Ocean Park, Michael Boos, said that since the arrival of Le Le and Ying Ying in Hong Kong in 2007, attempts were being made for natural mating from 2010.
However, they only succeeded recently, ten years after they started trying.
The mating is exciting for the entire team because the chances of a successful pregnancy are a lot higher in natural mating as compared to pregnancy using artificial insemination.
He shared that if the pregnancy is successful, the signs for it would begin showing after late June.
However, Ying Ying may have a pseudopregnancy. Nonetheless, the zookeepers are expecting to see young babies soon so that the number of this vulnerable species does not see a decrease.
Panda’s gestation period generally ranges from 72-324 days and that is a broad window. Zookeepers would be able to confirm Ying Ying’s pregnancy 14-17 days before she gives birth.
It is noteworthy that mating is rare because the chances that both of the animals are in the mood to mate at the same moment is extremely less.
