Airports throughout the UK are going to lift the ban on liquids exceeding 100ml mark in the cabin luggage.
This is good news for people who want to get larger bottles with them for long flights.
According to the new rules, you won’t have to take your laptop out of your bag for security checks – and that’s really something you don’t want to do while a long queue of unhappy travelers waits behind you.
All this has been made possible by a state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology that can image the luggage in three dimensions, unlike X-rays and ultrasound technology that only do a 2D scan.
This technology that’s both efficient and secure is expected to arrive at all the airports in the UK by 2022.
The working principle of the new scanners is the same as that of CT scanners that are used for diagnostic imaging in hospitals. The CT scan creates a 3D image of the brain, or any other part of your body, while these machines will 3D scan your luggage.
There would hardly be a need for manual bag checking as this technique will enable the security personnel to zoom in and look closely if something seems fishy.
Busy airports like Chicago’s O’Hare and Schiphol at Amsterdam are already using this technology on a practical basis and the results are great.
Once implemented, the new set of rules will make it very swift and hassle-free to pass through security checks.
The reason behind the 100ml liquid limit was the discovery of a terrorist plan that involved blowing up 10 planes using explosives camouflaged in drink bottles. The limit was set back in 2006.
Speaking about the new rules, UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: “The equipment will boost the role our airports play in securing the UK’s position as a global hub for trade, tourism and investment.”
Grant Shapps, Secretary of Transport, added: “The new screening equipment will improve security and make the experience smoother and less stressful for passengers.”
As of now, the scanners have been successfully tested at Heathrow London and are soon going to be functional at a number of airports across the country.
“This technology will make air travel, simple, streamlined and more secure,” Heathrow chief John Holland-Kaye said. Hope it does!
