Dominic Raab announced that Britain would continue its lockdown for a minimum of 3 more weeks, and it may be extended until all the laid out targets are met.
In his address, he also ensured that the death rate is steadily decreasing, and the NHS is not overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients.
Mr. Raab further added the restrictions imposed right now are proving to be helpful in curbing the spread of this virus. However, he highlighted five key objectives that the country has to meet before lockdown can be lifted, which include –
- NHS is able to efficiently deal with critical care as well as special treatment across the country.
- A consistent and sustained drop in the death rates so that experts can verify that the peak has been surpassed.
- Ensuring that the country has adequate PPE and testing capacity to facilitate a relaxed measure
- Fall of the infection rate to a “manageable level.

- Making sure that the new changes do not pave the way for another infection peak.
He also said that if they rushed to relax the social measures right now, it would jeopardize the progress that the country has made so far.
Mr. Raab further added that country might take three months to come out of its peak, which means the lockdown can be extended till June. And, experts also indicated that social distancing measures could remain active until the vaccine is discovered, which could again take around 18 months.
The disease continues to spread rapidly in certain parts of the country; however, it is witnessing a low contagion rate (R1). This means a sufferer who is passing the virus is less than one individual.
Mr. Raab said that the country was at a vulnerable and dangerous stage of COVID-19. While there is growth, people need to be patient for a little longer. If the country relaxes its measures now, it will be risking the current progress and efforts of so many people.
He added that Britain has come a long way and lost many loved ones, and right now, everyone needs to make combined efforts not to give this virus another chance.
Many other European countries have eased the measures, but Mr. Raab refused to mention a timeline on when the lockdown will be ended. He said it would be irresponsible to do so, but he indicated that the lockdown might be extended till June.
