In Texas, border officials discovered a handful of undocumented immigrants, approximately 20 people, who were hiding under the floorboards of a trailer in attempts to cross the southern border.
This was discovered just days before Vice President Kamala Harris revealed that she has upcoming plans in order to help with the immigration crisis happening.
The immigrants that had attempted to smuggle themselves in had ultimately failed, including a total of 18 adults and 2 children. The agents found them after agents alerted the others that they found the trailer at one of their checkpoints.
Officials have found humongous bags and other items in order to conceal their existence as they try to cross the border. If they had not been found any sooner, there was a high possibility for the lot to have been dead due to weather conditions rising in Texas.
In attempts to alleviate the situation, Harris plans on visiting Mexico and Guatemala, but avoids the border altogether because she hands over the responsibility to DHS Alejandro Mayorkas.
The Biden Administration is currently figuring out how else they could address the situation, and Mayorkas has contributed the information that he already knows with what he has experienced himself at the border.
Numbers are on the rise as time passes, already hitting an all time high of 170,000 migrants at the US-Mexico border last March. Many families have traveled alongside unaccompanied children, the Biden administration has a limited amount of facilities for the migrants to stay in.
With the less-restrictive immigration policies, crime rates are also rising alongside trafficking, in which children are left alone with no parental or adult guidance. For example, there have been abductors that dropped siblings over the wall who have been rescued by border officials, and another child desperately begging for help because his group had abandoned him to be by himself.
The situation calls for help and the Biden administration are working alongside other officials to try to strengthen their security.
There has been huge criticism, officials stating that “Vice President Harris needs to go down to the border and see this for herself,”
There are many challenges that both sides are facing, and there are no easy solutions. Harris tells the public, “We have to figure out how to assess our impact. It will not be obvious overnight. It will take some time to see the benefits of that work, but it will be worth it,”
