ICE has arrested over 170 undocumented immigrants from several sanctuary cities across the country.
In yet another crackdown on undocumented immigrants who are being protected by cities that have shunned ICE policies, the authorities have apprehended 172 individuals.
The clampdown on illegal immigration took place across several cities, including Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., Seattle, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York, between October 3 and October 9.
As ICE has alleged, over 80% of the arrested immigrants were allowed to move freely in the communities despite having pending charges or previous criminal convictions.
“Last fiscal year, 86% of people arrested by ICE had criminal convictions or pending charges. ICE focuses its resources on those who pose the greatest threat to public safety,” Chad F. Wolf of the Department of Homeland Security said.
“The men and women of ICE put their lives on the line every day to keep these individuals off the streets.
“The Department will continue to carry out lawful enforcement actions in order to keep our communities safe, regardless of whether or not we have cooperation from state and local officials. Politics will not come before safety when enforcing the law and keeping our citizens safe.”
As ICE’s Tony H. Pham, the Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Director, added, they will continue “to protect communities … regardless of any locality’s cooperation policies – which is part of our Congressionally mandated mission.”
“Officers and agents of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement are sworn federal law enforcement officers who enforce U.S. immigration laws created by Congress to keep this country safe,” Pham said.
