The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way ordinary life is conducted around the globe. University campuses were no exceptions; for the first time in history, universities move all the classes to online platforms. While the reception has been mixed, many expected everything to return to normal for the fall semester.
However, the volatility of the situation has forced some universities to start considering the possibility of cancelling in-person classes for another semester.
Currently, Boston University has moved all its academic programs to an online platform. In an announcement published last Friday, that although it is “unlikely”, administration is preparing for a contingency plan for resuming in-person courses on January 2021.
University officials emphasize that opening the campus for the fall semester is what everyone wants. They added that until it is safe for everyone to return, the school will continue their housing and dining services.
Harvard University’s stance is almost identical. Harvard was one of the first academic institutions to shut down to minimize the spread of the virus between its members.
In an interview last week, Harvard’s President said that the school is considering all the options on the table. He mentioned that the great uncertainty of this epidemic makes it difficult for long-term planning.
Oregon State on the other side of the country maintained a similar position. In an interview with a local newspaper, OSU’s spokesperson said that while they certainly hope things will subside, hope can’t be a strategy and thus they are preparing for any situation.
Down in the south, Arizona university had a more confident tone. In their written statement, the university said that they are “cautiously optimistic” although the wellbeing of its members will of course be first and foremost.
Students were generally accepting of the cautiousness that their schools have been showing. One BU student said that although she definitely misses the human interaction aspect, health and safety are uncompromisable.
The suspension of in-person activities have changed almost all aspects of campus life. From spring breaks being cancelled to commencement ceremonies being delayed, university students’ lives have been affected like those from other walks of life.
We certainly hope that we can once again return to the life before this pandemic has begun. Share with us your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to follow us on Facebook for more articles like this one.
