Over 500 students of the University Of Canberra got evacuated after people reported a suspected gas leak only for the foul odor to turn out to be caused by a smelly fruit.
As it happens, the bad smell that spread throughout the library of the complex was caused by a stinky durian fruit.
Following the incident, the library’s Facebook page announced that the building had been successfully evacuated in less than six minutes.
“We’ve been evacuated!” The University of Canberra Library wrote. “Will post an update when students can re-enter the building.”
Later on, the library staff added:
“And we’re open! Thanks to everyone for evacuating so quickly and safely – about 550 people left the building in under 6 minutes. Fortunately the suspected gas leak turned out to be a part of a durian – the offending fruit has now been removed.”
As an investigation into the mysterious odor revealed, the smell originated from durian leftovers that were found in one of the trash bins in the library.
Durian is a popular Asian fruit that is known not only for its stinky smell but also for its divine taste. Due to durian’s foul odor, however, the fruit has been banned in various locations such as the public transport systems and other public places.
After the successful evacuation, several students who thought the incident was pretty funny decided to comment under the library’s post.
“Tastes like heaven. Smells like hell! In Singapore they have ‘don’t eat durian’ on the train signs!” one person shared.
“The smell is terrible but nice to eat,” another one added, while others suggested the students should know better than to leave durian leftovers in a library.
