Unsold Food Boxes To Be Sold for £3.09 by Morrisons to Reduce Waste


Morrisons is going to become the first UK supermarket to provide food past its ‘best before’ date in a bid in order to crack down on food waste.

The supermarket chain is planning to flog produce at least £10 for only £3.09 and will allow customers to buy the unsold boxes of fruit, bakery, veg, and deli items through the app Too Good To Go prior to their pickup from the local stores.

The Morrisons have trialed the service in numerous stores and have finally announced that it will be available in all the 494 supermarkets throughout the country, effective from November 26, Tuesday.

The aim of the big step is to aid customers on a budget and to give another channel for food that would otherwise have been wasted.

The supermarket hopes to distribute 350,000 boxes of unsold food the next year. This will not only reduce the wastage of food but will also lessen CO2 emissions by 882 tonnes.

This is equal to driving from Edinburgh to London 5,351 times. By this idea, Morrisons is committed to eliminating operational food waste by at least 50 percent in a decade, i.e., by 2030.

The Market Street Director at the Morrisons, Jayne Wall, claims that they are using technology to aid them to reduce food waste and to aid more people afford to eat properly.

This will also, according to him, mean that they will waste less food this Christmas since it will find a home for products which cannot be sold post festive period.

Too Good To Go app users have saved more than 1 million meals till date through the app, averting 2.5 million kg of CO2 emissions.

In order to use the service, all people are required to do is to download the app and search for local stores with food available.
