The US has recently announced how it will no longer allow any Afghan refugees to board its evacuation flights, starting today.
In a public statement released this morning, authorities have requested all Afghan refugees to stop turning up to Kabul’s airport because it plans on focusing upon its main target mission and that entails evacuating all trapped Americans from Afghanistan.
While America has been called out for assisting the war-torn nation’s citizens by allowing thousands of refugees to flee Afghanistan, the US says that it can no longer do that anymore.point 270 |
And that’s because its main priority now revolves around helping out its own citizens who have been stranded at Kabul’s airport, ever since the recent Taliban takeover.point 154 | 1
With just days nearing the red line deadline of August 31st, US troops appear to be in full swing, finalizing their plans on how they will carry out their evacuation mission.point 408 |
Moreover, just yesterday, it was revealed how the Taliban warned of ‘severe’ consequences if America planned to extend its deadline of troops’ withdrawal.point 150 | 1
Yesterday, the Taliban spokesperson appeared on Sky News, boldly mentioning how there was simply no more room for negotiations in terms of the deadline extension.point 410 |
Referring to August 31st as the red line, he further went on to confirm how an extension would worsen the relationship between both sides and develop a sense of mistrust.point 141 | 1
Hence, with the major deadline looming over many people’s heads, America mentioned how it had a prioritized task at hand and there was simply no way it could afford any further delay. For this reason, it announced how only US citizens and NATO workers would now be allowed to go to the airport.
At the moment, there are about 20,000 people in waiting, who are relying on American forces for their safe and timely evacuation. How and when that takes place is still a big question on so many people’s minds as the world closely watches the Biden administration’s moves in the coming days.
