18-year-old Francisco Erwin Galicia was finally released from an immigration center after he was wrongly detained for four weeks.
He said he was not able to shower and was starved of food.
The Texas-born US citizen was released from the South Texas Detention Facility in Pearsall. He lost 26 pounds as officers didn’t give him enough food.
The teen also said that he wasn’t allowed to shower, leaving his skin dirty and dry. Francisco added that the conditions were so bad he almost asked to be self-deported.
While en route to Ranger College in Texas, Francisco had been detained at a CBP checkpoint along with his 17-year-old brother, Marlon Galicia, who was born in Mexico.
Francisco said that he and 60 other people were crammed into a holding area where they were given aluminum-foil blankets and slept on the floor.
Some men were forced to sleep on the restroom floor with many being bitten by ticks. This left many of them very sick. However, they were scared to ask to go to doctors as CBP officers told them they would have to start all over again if they did.
“It was inhumane how they treated us. It got to the point where I was ready to sign a deportation paper just to not be suffering there anymore. I just needed to get out of there,” Francisco expressed.
“It’s one thing to see these conditions on TV and in the news. It’s another to go through them,” he added.
Francisco said he met Colombians, Hondurans, Salvadorans, Nicaraguans and more.
He and his brother were traveling to a soccer scouting event when they were detained after failing to show a US passport.
