A controversial vegan blogger who previously went viral for moving into the jungle has once again hit the headlines after blaming meat-eaters for Australia’s bushfire crisis.
As 39-year-old Leanne Ratcliffe, a.k.a. Freelee the Banana Girl, said, the “barbarian” diet consisting of animal products is the fuel “burning the country to a crisp.”
“Australia is on fire, and meat, dairy and eggs is the fuel,” the blogger said in one of her YouTube videos.
“Every time you line up at the supermarket for meat, dairy and eggs, you’re throwing petrol on your backyard fires.”
Banana Girl previously revealed she used to be a “meat-eating hypocrite” herself until she made the switch to a vegan diet some 13 years ago.
Since then, the blogger has claimed her new diet helped her heal a variety of digestive issues she had previously been suffering from.
In her video, the 39-year-old accused animal agriculture of being the “number one cause of deforestation and global warming and subsequently the bushfires.”
Besides bashing non-vegans, the blogger also shared a piece of advice for those who care enough about climate change to change their diets.
“All you have to do is shop in a different section of the supermarkets… buy the nut milks, the plant-based burgers or load up on pasta, potatoes, bananas and beans,” she added.
“The United Nations is telling us meat consumption must decrease by as much as 90 per cent for most of us to avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change. We are heading for doom because you still want to eat like a barbarian.”
As Banana claimed, going vegan helped her improve both physically as well as mentally. In addition, she believes she’s doing what’s best for our planet.
“Each day, a vegan saves 4,100 liters of water, 20 kilos of grain, a 30 square foot of forest and 20lbs of C02 equivalent and one animal’s life,” she added.
“Global warming is one of the greatest threats to our future as a species… and Australia is exceptionally vulnerable. One thing is sure, and that is that more extreme fire weather days are coming. An arsonist might light the fire, but your diet keeps them going.”
