A veterinarian with a heart of gold is searching for homeless people with pets in order to treat the animals free of charge and ensure they get to stay with their owners.
49-year-old California-based Kwane Stewart is an animal lover who spends his days driving around the state in search of homeless people with pets that could use medical examination and treatment.
As ‘The Street Vet’ explained, it isn’t in his intentions to judge homeless people or attempt to take their pets away. Instead, he wants to treat them for free in order to increase their chances of staying with their owners longer.
While Mr. Stewart was previously providing his services to high-paying clients, he decided to make a drastic switch and focus on people who couldn’t pay for the treatment of their animals after the Great Recession.
Before the man knew it, his new passion kicked off and there were plenty of people who could use a free check-up for their pets.
“Before I knew it, I had a whole line. There was something about it that I loved. I did it one more time before I decided to just take it to the street and walk to homeless people instead of waiting for them to walk up to me,” Stewart told CNN.
Nowadays, The Street Vet regularly treats homeless animals and pays for various medications and food from his own pocket.
Whenever the animal’s condition is too severe to be treated on the street, Stewart raises funds on GoFundMe to cover the expenses of more costly procedures at the clinic.
In his free time, he also works for Netflix whereas he is responsible for overlooking the safety measures taken to ensure that animals on movie sets don’t get harmed.
Speaking of his newfound passion, the veterinarian who runs his own series called ‘Dr. Kwane: The Street Vet’ added:
“I had my own prejudgments, like a lot of people, about homeless people before I started doing this work. You just make assumptions about their story without even knowing anything about them (…)
“These homeless people take care of their pets even better than we do. When they own a pet, it engenders this generosity. They always make sure their pet is fed. Medically is where they need help.”
