One of the few silver linings of Covid-19 is that it gave a chance for us to recognize the heroes among us.
We have covered many stories of the heroes around us from healthcare workers giving it their all in the front lines to those who try to brighten the community.
Rachel Hartley, a nurse from Virginia, is another one of the heroes who deserve our respect. Rachel and her husband Taylor sailed for three days from their home in Lynchburg to New York City because she wanted to be in the front lines in the fight against the global pandemic.
Since crossing the Atlantic last winter, Hartley signed a short contract with a Brooklyn hospital that expires next month. She said that if possible, she wanted to extend the contract and continue to save lives in NYC.
In an interview with NBC New York, Hartley said that she knew her skills would be of greater help in NYC than in Virginia. As of this writing, under 26,000 cases of Covid-19 was confirmed in Virginia compared to more than 187,000 cases in NYC.
Knowing that she could be of more help in the city that was hit worst by the virus, she said that the call of duty was too great for her to ignore. Her specialty is in the Emergency Room, where she is said to be working in right now.
Fox News reports that the Hartleys have docked in a marina in Brooklyn. Although the docking costs can be as expensive as $12,000 per month, the owners of the marina said they will not charge the Hartleys. The owners said they had no intention to charge someone who came to help NYC.
Taylor spoke highly of his wife in an interview with NBC New York, hailing her as a hero for him, their family and friends just like the many heroes in scrubs who are helping save lives around the world.
Rachel said that the work in Brooklyn has one of the toughest tasks she has had to take. Of the many factors, she says that the sheer number of deaths she has to deal with everyday is definitely the toughest part.
