Weeks after the 16-year-old environmental activist who is running for a Nobel Peace Prize delivered a powerful and dramatic speech as she addressed the world leaders at the United Nations Climate Summit, Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the girl’s claims and said she’s being “used by adults.
”
In her confrontation at the UN Climate Summit, Greta appeared to be having a “meltdown” as she said:
“People are dying and dying ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction, and all you can talk about is the money and fairy tales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!?”
The activist’s direct approach gained her millions of followers from around the world. On the other hand, however, there are also plenty of people who suggested that the girl is mentally unstable and too young to understand how the world works.
One of the members of the opposition is Russian president Vladimir Putin who dismissed the young activist and claimed she was poorly informed.
“I may disappoint you but I don’t share the common excitement about the speech by Greta Thunberg,” the president said in his speech.
“No one has explained to Greta that the modern world is complex and different and… people in Africa or in many Asian countries want to live at the same wealth level as in Sweden.
“Go and explain to developing countries why they should continue living in poverty and not be like Sweden.”
Just recently, Greta has also been mocked by dozens of public figures and politicians including US President Donald Trump and Canadian MP Maxime Bernier.
Despite his comments, Putin insisted that young people with a passion for environmental preservation should be supported.
“But when someone is using children and teenagers in personal interests, it only deserves to be condemned,” he added.
“I’m sure that Greta is a kind and very sincere girl. But adults must do everything not to bring teenagers and children into some extreme situations.”
