Wright, voice actor of Sebastian the crab in Disney’s “The Little Mermaid,” has passed away at the age of 74. He was also known for singing the Oscar-winning song, “Under the Sea”.
His role was a Jamaican crab who was the right hand man (or crab, in this instance) for King Triton in the 1989 film. The film has skyrocketed in views and has been seen by generations of Disney lovers. He has been in the cinema industry for quite a while.
In the town of Montgomery, New York, Wright’s death had been confirmed alongside his daughter’s comment when confirming his death to Hollywood Reporter. She says that her father was the “brightest light”.
His town comments on their Facebook page: “On top of his passion for the arts and for his love for his family, Sam was most known for walking into a room and simply providing PURE JOY to those he interacted with.”
They added that he “loved to entertain, he loved to make people smile and laugh and he loved to love.” His voice was adorned by one of the best musical numbers known to Disney. “Under The Sea” had won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and also achieved a Grammy in the process.
The actor even starred in the TV series adaptation of “The Little Mermaid,” contributing to another movie in 2000 called “Dinosaur.” His career includes being a jazz musician named Dizzy Gillespie in a biographical film called “Bird”. The story follows saxophonist Charlie Parker.
Wright has also contributed his works to “The Lion King” musical on Broadway. His hometown states that he had the greatest impact for setting up the region’s first performing arts school. It is called the Hudson Valley Conservatory.
A page on Facebook says that the “greater Town of Montgomery Community mourns together today. As we say goodbye to a pillar in our community and ask everyone to share a memory and help us celebrate the life of this great man. We are overwhelmed with the love being sent our way.”
