A 78-year-old referee and a former volleyball player love to help the people in his Paulding County, Georgia, community.
Lemuel Buster arrives hours early at the games and helps the coaches.
When his car died, instead of giving up his job, he spent hundreds of dollars on a rental car to continue refereeing.
“I made a commitment and a commitment means a lot to me,” Buster told WXIA-TV.
“I did what I knew I needed to do. I rented a car.”
His dedication, his commitment and his desire to serve the people of his community touched everyone’s heart.
The volleyball players along with their parents decided to surprise Buster with a thoughtful gift.
They started raising money for the gift.
When they presented him the gift in the parking lot, Buster was left in tears.
It was a car – a convertible Chrysler Sebring.
“I turn around, and I see moms, dads with their cameras taking pictures. I see girls that had played earlier—why are they here?” Buster said.
The players and their parents also presented him with $2,000 to cover the expense of gas.
“I will not ever forget this day as long as I live. I’m in tears.”
“These are my great-grandchildren. The parents are my children. We’re family.”
“So what have I learned from here? There are good people all over the place. All you need to do is smile”, Buster said.
Buster went to the Church in his new car first and it was blessed by a priest the same day.
