You have to hand it to restaurant servers if only for the fact that they can delicately balance food-filled plates and still deliver them to your table fresh and with the food still looking fantastic.

But that’s nothing compared to this waiter who slipped on the floor but still managed to NOT break any plates.

Jamie Shoebridge has had three years of experience waiting tables but considering his recent acrobatic save, he’d also have a promising career in the circus.

The near-accident happened on the afternoon of February 9 as the lunchtime rush was in full swing. CCTV cameras managed to capture the moment Shoebridge slipped on some peppercorn sauce on the floor and fell down, even taking down a decorative plant on the way.

But even more amazing, and bizarre is the fact that he managed to keep hold of the plate on his left hand while keeping the three other meals on a tray in his right hand balanced.

Shoebridge, a restaurant supervisor from Nottingham, said that he immediately got back up to his feet and delivered the meals without further mishap and the diners none the wiser.

“One minute I was walking along with the plates and the next minute I was on the floor,” said Shoebridge. “I lost my footing and fell down face first.

“There was some peppercorn sauce on the floor and I slipped on it. It’s all a blur and I’m not sure how it happened,” he continued. “It was just an instinct to lift my arms up and try to save the plates. I just got back up and carried on as normal.”

Out of the order of three roast beef dinners and bangers and mash dish, the only casualty was a sausage and a couple of peas, items that the customers didn’t really miss.

“I have no idea how none of the plates got smashed,” said Shoebridge. “I’m impressed with myself.”

“It didn’t hurt but I was very confused as to how it happened. We all had a laugh about it in the office. It has become a bit of a running joke at work now.”

In truth, it’s not easy being a restaurant server. Apart from rude customers who sometimes treat the staff as part of the furniture, exhaustion can lead to breakages that can be deducted from the employee’s pay. So it’s refreshing to see something that restaurant can both be impressed by and still have a laugh at (especially at the close call).
